Naish Boxer SLE to Showcase Robotics

The Naish Boxer SLE is currently being used to show the capabilities of a new flying robot developed by a four man German team. Michael Achtelik, Klaus-Michael Doth, Daniel Gurdan, and Jan Stumpf have all been working on multi-rotor helicopters since 2002. They have since founded a company called "Ascending Technologies GmbH" in Germany. Gurdan and Stumpf did their masters thesis at the Lab for Ditributed Robotics at the prestigious MIT in Massachusetts. Their focus has been to create multi-rotor flying platforms that are able to be flown in strong, gusty winds. Gurdan, flying the kite at left, is using Naish kites to show how the flying platform can perform in windy conditions. The team mounts an HD camera on the platform to record the images from the eye of the platform. The name of the flying platform is the "X-3D BL UFO" and a simple version will be available in the model-helicopter market in a few months.

Get Rich With These Guys

Some business leaders have a knack for turning every company they become involved with into a market-dominating business, richly rewarding shareholders in the process. Steve Jobs, with his performances at Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Pixar, is a good example of this.

In the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, there are a few such leaders who have the Midas touch, turning every company they put their hands on into gold. They've started up company after company, and each firm either becomes a market leader in its niche or gets acquired. So without further ado, here are three pioneers in those sectors who have founded past and current public companies that have demolished the performance of the S&P index.

Frederic MollMoll is best known as one of the co-founders of medical device company and Rule Breakers pick Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG).

Transcript of Bush's Speech

President Bush: Good morning. I've just had a good meeting with Secretary of Defense Gates and General Pete Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Secretary Gates and General Pace updated me on the deployment of American reinforcements to Iraq.

At this moment, two of the five additional U.S. Army brigades we are sending for this mission are operating in Baghdad. A third brigade is now moving from Kuwait and will be fully operation in Baghdad in the coming weeks. And the remaining two brigades will deploy in April and May.

It will be early June before all ...

The Death of a Beautiful Theory? Dopamine And Reward Prediction Error

Very early in the history of artificial intelligence research, it was apparent that cognitive agents needed to be able to maximize reward by changing their behavior. But this leads to a "credit-assignment" problem: how does the agent know which of its actions led to the reward? An early solution was to select the behavior with the maximal predicted rewards, and to later adjust the likelihood of that behavior according to whether it ultimately led to the anticipated reward. These "temporal-difference" errors in reward prediction were first implemented in a 1950's checker-playing program, before exploding in popularity some 30 years later.

This repopularization seemed to originate from a tantalizing discovery: the brain's most ancient structures were releasing dopamine in exactly the way predicted by temporal-difference learning algorithms.
